How Skiing Transcends Cultural Barriers and Builds Stronger Communities

The sport of Nordic skiing has never been known for diversity. A committed group of individuals in Boise, Idaho made up of teachers, coaches, and community leaders are working to change that.

The Bogus Basin Nordic Team (BBNT) began welcoming kids from the Boise refugee community to participate in nordic skiing back in 2011. What started as one elementary school teacher working to expose four of her Refugee students to a new world of winter and snow has now grown to as many as 10-12 “Refuski athletes,” most of whom started their lives as displaced children. This is the story of how sport can transcend cultural barriers to build stronger communities.
