Last summer Conservation International spent time along the Northern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica to simply observe current fishing practices. What they learned was that nearly every fisherman admitted to either partaking in or observing illegal and unregulated fishing practices on a daily basis. The majority of the regions current fisherman also agreed that they don’t wish this profession among their children as it’s unhealthy for their country. With an estimated 1 in 5 fish being caught illegally, the problem is spiraling out of control. As trolling scrapes the ocean of all its resources there is literally no marine life left to be caught or observed.
Our final though for now goes something like this….. Can a biological gem such as Costa Rica really lose all of the marine life that makes it so desirable?
